Public Opinion Surveys

Survey research was used to seek input as to public/customer and stakeholder vision, goals and opinions on Ohio’s existing and future transportation system. Two statewide mail and telephone surveys (reaching over 1,200 customers and 800 transportation stakeholders) were conducted by the Institute of Policy Research from the University of Cincinnati. A third survey, conducted by ODOT, surveyed over 1,000 Ohio driving-age high school students.

The reasoning for this approach was to capture a statistically valid sample and reliable

statewide customer vision for long range transportation goals. ODOT planning staff had concerns that comments and goals provided through unfocused long range planning public meetings may result in advocating for specific projects or based on opinions of special interest groups rather than reflecting statewide opinions.

Results from the surveys was compared and incorporated into ODOT, FHWA and Metropolitan Planning Organizations (MPO) transportation goals to produce long range goals for Ohio’s transportation system. (See Update Chapter 2 - DRAFT)
