The Rufus Putnam map of Ohio, drawn in the first year of statehood and printed in January 1804, is the first published map of the state. Putnam was the Superintendent of the Ohio Company, which settled the Muskingum and Hocking valleys, and Surveyor-General of the United States from 1796-1803.
